About
Why
One of the most important decisions a parent can make for their child is which school to attend. In small cities, this decision is easy because there are not few to no choices. In large cities, such as Los Angeles, the decision is more complex. A parent could send their kid to the local school to which their residence is assigned, but that school may not be the best fit. Fortunately, the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), like large districts across the country, offers a multitude of options separate from a child's zoned school. Theme magnet programs, language immersion, specialized instruction - Los Angeles has many wonderful schools available to residents across the city, as part of its Choices program. Unfortunately, LAUSD's websites are old, and it is not easy to learn which school you are zoned for or if other schools are near or far. This difficulty is especially important if parents are looking to move to reside near a specific school. This website makes it easy to see where LAUSD schools are located and filter them by type. You can scroll around a map and see school attendance boundaries overlaid, making it easy to see exactly where your child will attend. You can also provide a street address, and the website tells you which schools your child is zoned for. You can filter for Choices programs too - Magnet, School for Advanced Studies, and Dual Language.
Who
Hi! I am Zack, a parent of a 4 year old and 1 year old. When I moved to Los Angeles in 2016, my wife and I did not consider schools. Once it came time to care, we started looking for a new home and were quickly overwhelmed. We spent many hours cross-referencing LAUSD websites, our own spreadsheet, and Google Maps but could never quite keep everything straight. Frustrated, I knew there had to be a better way. This website is my attempt at that better way.
How to read the map
- Neighborhood schools: the school(s) assigned to each attendance zone. Living in the zone guarantees a seat.
- Magnet: magnet programs listed for the zone. Admission is by application.
- Dual language: dual-language and language-immersion programs. Admission is by application.
- School for Advanced Studies (SAS): schools on LAUSD's SAS list. SAS programs have no boundaries of their own, so they are shown using the host school's zone. Admission is by application conditional on meeting LAUSD's SAS criteria.
